Just as the kids are going back to school this year, many kids are also going back to fall sports, which also means many parents will be spending even more time at the laundromat washing clothes. While most of us expect the kids to get dirty during a typical school day, there's something about a baseball field (or any other sport you child may play) that goes above and beyond normal levels of sweat and dirt. Heck, just watching the game leaves most of us in a puddle. And since the heat doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, we thought it might be useful to share some of our favorite tips for laundering sports gear. Read on for four fall sports laundry hacks to live by if you have kids.
Laundry Hacks #1: Turn Jerseys Inside Out
Sports clothing including jerseys are typically lined with the team logo and player number. While older kids may have a jersey with a number/name stitched in, many jerseys are simply vinyl decals that have been ironed or screen-printed onto the item. The best way to keep these types of details looking sharp all season long is to turn your jerseys inside out. This will prevent the jersey from getting damaged or fraying, and make sure that your kids look the part when they hit the field.
The good news is that most kids end up taking their kids off inside out, so chances are that your kids are already doing this step for you, but make sure you are paying attention before you throw their jerseys in the wash.
Laundry Hacks #2: Pre-Treat Stains
The most important step you can take if you have kids playing sports is to pre-treat any stains that may occur on the field. One of the most common stains you'll likely encounter during the fall is a grass stain or dirt stain from sliding and avoiding getting out. There's so many different ways to treat these stains that we'll be sharing a follow-up piece just covering stain removal. However, for the sake of this article, it's worth remembering that you should treat stains immediately if you want to keep your kids' sports clothing bright white.
#3 Wash Sports Clothing Separately
We're often guilty of throwing anything and everything into the wash at one time, especially when we're short on time. However, when it comes to laundering sports-related clothing, it's particularly important to wash jerseys separate from the rest of your laundry. If that seems like a lot to ask, you should at least make sure that you're washing darks with other darks and whites with other whites, and that loads aren't too big. This will insure that each piece is being properly washed while also preventing sports clothing from getting damaged.
Laundry Hacks #4: Air Dry
While it's still hot, we find that air drying sports-related clothing outside in the sun seems to add something to our jerseys. If that's not possible, we still encourage you to air dry your sports gear in lieu of tossing it in the dryer to prevent unnecessary shrinkage. Those jerseys have to last you all season long, so the last thing you want is for your kid to outgrow it mid-season.
