How to Clean a Commercial Dryer

Commercial Dryer in North Carolina

Keeping your dryers clean will not only ensure that your laundry comes out fresh and clean, but it can also help give your unit a longer lifespan. Not cleaning a dryer regularly can lead to lint and residue buildup, which can cause all kinds of problems, including creating a fire hazard.

If particles build up in the lint traps or the vent, it can cause a risk of fire.  If the vent becomes clogged, it can reduce air flow and create excessive heat build-up that can spark a fire. Let's take a closer look!

How To Clean Your Commercial Dryer in North Carolina

With that in mind, let’s start with cleaning the lint filter. It should be cleaned after every use, but in a laundry facility or laundromat, that may not happen. Be sure to instruct employees and leave signs for customers reminding them that it is important to clean the lint trap before and after using the dryer. When you perform your regular cleaning, pull out the filter and vacuum around it. If fabric softener sheets are used, it can cause a layer of film on the mesh screen that will need to be removed. You can wash the screen in warm soapy water to remove the build-up. If it has a thick layer, you may have to scrub it gently to remove all the residue.

The inside drum should be wiped out with a damp cloth. Unless dirty clothes ended up inside, there probably isn’t much to clean inside the drum. If there is residue or stuff stuck inside, you can start the dryer for a few minutes to warm up the residue, then scrape it off with a rubber spatula or the edge of a spoon. Then wipe down the area to remove any additional residue.

Now you need to clean the dryer vent, which is where all that flammable lint is located. If it remains clogged for a long time it can also burn out the heating element. If the dryer seems to take longer to dry a load than it used to, a clogged vent may be the cause. Cleaning it regularly will help you avoid this problem.

Detach the dryer vent and vacuum it out, or use an extendable brush to get inside and pull out any trapped lint. Also vacuum or clean up any lint around the area. Check the outside area where the vent leads to make sure it is not blocked. You may also want to pop open the dryer from the top or side to vacuum out the area between the drum and housing. Lint can also get trapped there.

Now that the inside is clean and lint free, it’s time to wipe down the outside. Using a mixture of half warm water and white vinegar, wipe down the whole unit to kill any bacteria and remove any spills or stains. If your unit has a scuff mark on it, try a “magic eraser” sponge on it to remove the black marks. Test it in an area you can’t see to make sure it won’t damage the finish before using it all over.
