Welcome back! In our last article, we talked about the history of laundromats and how they got their start back in the 1930s. We mentioned that while the vague concept of what we know as a laundromat today was available in the 1950s, the idea didn’t really take off until the mid-1960s.
Since then, technology has come a long way. That means laundromats have changed quite a bit in the last several decades as well.
Now, the machines found in these facilities are able to save water, energy and money for both the user and the owner of the laundromat. That’s all because of new water heaters, washing cycles and more.
In addition to washing machines, dryers were eventually added to the mix and even those have come a long way in a very short amount of time. Dryers are able to do their job in less than half the time compared to what it took in the 1970s.
All the machines are now digitally operated and able to accept credit cards as payment. Even more, there is no longer a need for an on-duty manager. All machines are self-serve and work on an automated system that allows managers to keep things under control from anywhere that has Wi-Fi.
Laundromats now come equipped with wash-dry-fold services, dry cleaning, free Wi-Fi, TV with cable and vending machines. Most even have a play area for children. The convenience and amenities offered for customers is far beyond anything expected a few decades ago.
People have busy schedules. Whether it’s work, school or taking care of a family, laundry shouldn’t be an inconvenience. That’s why laundromats are accepted today and great for those who need them. Most are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This means that the average working adult can do their laundry after or before work, without having to stress about it.
Did you know that there are more than 30,000 facilities operating all over the U.S.? That’s right! Laundromats are a booming business that account for more than five billion dollars in revenue every single year!
