If you've been following along, we've recently started a new series sharing our favorite laundry hacks. Last week, we discussed a few organizational approaches to doing laundry that work. Today we'll discuss a few more laundry hacks that are sure to help you keep your laundry looking fresh, help you save money and prevent future laundry mishaps.
Laundry Hacks that Really Work! #4 Don't Skimp on Laundry Detergent
We are all about saving money, but when it comes to laundry detergent, we've found that the store brand alternative just doesn't measure up. As such, if you really want your clothes to keep that "new" look for longer, don't skimp (with the exception of dryer sheets). Brand name laundry detergent, for whatever reason, consistently outperforms the imposters.
Your next question will inevitably be, "so, what name brand is best." We've used them all, and while we might notice a slight difference when we use Tide, we find that it really doesn't matter as long as you're using a brand name (when it comes to washing your "good" clothes). That said, we find that liquid detergent is better for soaking really dirty clothes, and store brand detergent is completely fine for washing towels and sheets. For all-purpose washes at the laundromat, we still love a good laundry pod.
Please note that if you're using a HE (High Efficiency) performance washer, you absolutely must use HE detergent. While there are a ton of crafty marketing gimmicks out there, HE detergent is not one of them. If you don't use HE detergent while using a HE washer, you will mess up the machine.
Laundry Hacks that Really Work! # 5 Wash Laundry in Cold Water
With few exceptions, if you want to save money and keep your clothes looking fresh, wash your laundry in cold water. Warm or hot water can set stains, so if you don't know what you're doing with regard to stain removal, it is better to play it safe and wash your items in cold water. Cold water prevents colors from bleeding onto other items (especially if you're using an older washing machine), and can also save you money because you don't need to use the hot water heater.
There's a lot more to using cold water, so stay tuned for a future post on how to use cold water to wash your clothes.
Laundry Hacks that Really Work! #6 Pay Special Attention to White Clothing
If you wash a lot of whites, then you likely know the "drama" that goes with trying to keep those whites WHITE! Accidently throw a white shirt in with a red one and you'll quickly realize how important it is to wash whites separately if you want to keep them looking their best. So, is it really that necessary to wash whites separately? Yes! But that's not the only thing you can do to keep your whites looking good.
- Wash white clothes or sheets only with other white pieces.
- Use hot water when washing whites.
- Only use brand-name LIQUID detergent.
- Add a scoop of Oxiclean to the wash to boost the cleaning agent.
- Add Clorox bleach for extra brightening.
- Use a presoak cycle.
Follow the steps above and you'll be amazed at how well your whites stay white!
