More Hiring, Training, and Retaining Laundromat Staff Tips

Hiring staff is one of the most difficult tasks for a laundromat owner. Many times, the process takes longer than expected. Don't get frustrated and hire the first person who applies - the right fit for your business is out there! Be patient!

Advertise for exactly what you want. Make sure that your job posting is detailed about what is expected of the potential employee and what they can expect on a daily basis. This will save you time by eliminating people who are not truly interested in the position.

After you posted the job and you are getting ready to interview take a few of these helpful tips into account.

No one is perfect – Even if you met someone that matches your exact criteria it might not mean that they will be the best employee in the world. Someone with less experience can be trained to be a much better worker than someone who is stuck in their ways.

Team players – Look for someone that wants to be a part of a team. They will have to work with you and build your business even if they are working alone in the laundromat. Finding someone who has the same goals as you do will benefit you long term.

The past is not always the past – References are an extremely important part of hiring staff. If someone was a undependable employee in their previous job, chances are that will not change. Ask for at least two references. Some companies like to have a work and a personal reference since friends and family are more likely to tell the truth if someone is irresponsible. A candidate who refuses to give you any references is always a red flag.

Stay Goal Oriented- Know what type of employee you are looking for and stick to it. Do not just hire someone because you have some things in common, make sure they really are the right fit for your business.  Remember you will have to leave this person to represent your name and business when you are not there. It's always a good idea to give yourself a day or two to go over your decisions, and then call the person and offer the job.

It is also imperative to focus on people’s specific personality traits and what they excel at and molding that to fit your business. The best training you can give your new employee is hands on training. Let them experience the day to day workings with you. You might see a few places where you would like to make improvements in your business as well. Most attendants can be trained in anywhere from two shifts to a week. This is a small investment, if you look at what the value of a well trained staff member can mean to you.

After the initial training, your work is not done forever. Many companies choose to have weekly or monthly sit downs and training sessions to make sure they are all on the same page. Having well maintained and up to date handbooks will help you execute this part of the training process too. As most owners leave the store in their attendant's hand, they need a form of reference.
