Laundry Tips

Coin Operated Washers and Dryers in Charleston, SC

Everybody has to do laundry at some point. Even if they drop it off at the laundromat to have it done, there was still some thought and effort that went into taking it somewhere to be cleaned. Most people hate doing laundry. It's a monotonous task that takes too much time to complete. That doesn't mean that we can skip it altogether, though. Laundry is important and it must be done.

One of the reasons that we tend to hate doing laundry is because we're always making mistakes. We are either turning white socks pink, shrinking favorite sweaters or tangling pants in such a knot that we can't get them undone without stretching them.

One of the best ways to get a better handle on your laundry efforts is to understand the biggest mistakes we all make and how to avoid them.

Get a better understanding of care labels. This is one of the most common mistakes of all time. We think we know what the labels mean, but we really don't. Below you'll find a quick rundown of what the most common labels mean:

  • Clear circle - Dry clean
  • Square with a circle and dot inside it - Tumble dry low
  • Square with a circle and cross inside it - Do not tumble dry
  • Square with a circle and two dots inside it - Tumble dry medium
  • Square with a circle and three dot inside it - Tumble dry high
  • Clear triangle - Can use bleach
  • Iron icon with a dot - Low iron
  • Iron icon with two dots - Iron medium
  • Iron icon with three dots - Iron high
  • Iron icon with cross - No iron

Don't wash in too high temps. Another mistake we tend to make is washing our clothing in temperatures that are too hot. This will wear clothing out quickly and cause it to lose its shape. 90% of your laundry will probably need a 40° temperature. Keep that in mind.

Avoid drying clothing for too long. Excessive drying times will also ruin your clothing. It can cause items to shrink or it can cause them to become misshapen. Be sure to read the care label before you tumble dry. Follow the directions closely.

Failing to separate clothing. In an attempt to get laundry done quicker it can be tempting to throw everything together in the washing machine. However, this can cause all kinds of problems. The best way to wash clothing is to separate items. Wash darks together, lights with lights, jeans with other denim and shirts with shirts. Try to resist the urge to throw it all together in the washer.
