Can You Convert a Regular Washer to Coin Operated?

Commercial Washer in Greensboro, NCOne of most common questions we get from landlords or owners of small hospitality properties is whether or not they can change their noncommercial washer and dryer into coin-operated machines. While it may seem like converting machines that you already own into a coin-operated ones would be a cost-effective way to make some extra money, the truth is that the conversion may cost more than you think. For the best prices on a new or used vended dryer or vended commercial washer in Greensboro, NC, call T & L!

How hard could it be?

The assumption is that changing a standard household washer and dryer into coin-operated laundry machines involves nothing more than putting on a conversion kit and putting up a cost per load sign. In reality, the cost of the kit, supplies, and time needed to convert the machines may actually make it cheaper for you to consider buying used commercial laundry equipment. If you are familiar with the inner workings of a washing machine or dryer, the conversion may not be as challenging. For those who are not familiar with the internal components, the process can be more complicated than expected.

Steps to Install the Conversion Kit

Before you begin, you will need to choose the conversion kit that is most compatible with the washer and dryer brand that you have. Disconnecting the machine from all sources of electrical power is crucial before you begin working on the conversions.

1. Remove the machine's access panel per the instructions from the owner's manual. You will need to locate the machine's built-in timer.

2. Following the instructions in the conversion kit's manual, you will need to reprogram the machine's wiring using the conversion kit's timer as the primary timer for the washing machine or dryer.

3. Using electrical tape, wrap all exposed wires to ensure a secure and safe connection. The tape acts as insulation for the connections.

4. Replace the access panel on the machine and restore power to the unit. Repeat the process for both machines in the pair.

5. Test the machines to ensure that the coin-operated bypass timer works properly and that your machine functions normally.

There are many different conversion kits available and, although the process to convert your existing machine may sound simple, many people struggle to get the machine's timing right after the installation of a conversion device. Converted machines may experience significant problems after installation which can leave your tenants or guests feeling frustrated and you with a machine that isn't generating revenue as you had hoped.

  2. Hi. I currently have very outdated grandfathered laundry equipment. I've told the company to remove the equipment because all they do is go up on the price and they're constantly broken... no washers work as a matter of fact. I am in the process of finding washer and dryers on Facebook Marketplace and want to convert them into coin operated machines. If you can do this please let me know. If you have used laundry equipment let me know too. If you want to email me back that would be best. Thanks.
