Choosing the Right Laundromat Machine for Your Loads

Speed Queen Dealers SCYou might think that when it comes to a washer or dryer at a laundromat, you can just toss in any size load and let the machine do its job, but that’s not the case. Your laundry should be sorted and washed according to a few standards, both for the types of clothing you’re washing and the machine you’re using. Here are a few tips for making the most of the machines at a laundromat. Choosing the Right Laundromat Machine for Your Loads

Size matters.
A machine at a laundromat is going to be larger than one you’d use at home, but it doesn’t mean that you can pack it full of items. It may seem like a good idea to get 2-3 loads into one, but it’s not going to get your clothes clean and it may require a second rinse to remove soap, which is not going to save you time. Clothes need space to move around so they can be cleaned and dried efficiently. Also, if clothes are overcrowded, they can rub against each other, which can cause the fabric to pill.

Sort your clothing into loads that work for the size of the machine. A medium to large size washer can hold 12-15 pounds of clothes, which is about twice as much as a residential machine.  If you have heavy items, you may want to separate those, especially when you dry them.

A front load washer can hold more than a top loader, coming in at about 18 pounds of clothes. It is a good choice for large items such as comforters, sleeping bags and washable dog beds.

Read the instructions.
Most equipment will have instructions for best use. Be sure to read them to make sure you’re not overlooking a feature that could be helpful. Laundromats may have other signs posted that can also offer information that can help you best utilize the facility.

Check the time.
If you have a limited amount of time to do laundry and leave, be sure to wash items accordingly. You can have more than one machine going if you have a lot of laundry, because that will work better than overfilling one machine.

Also, your drying time will probably be the longest period you’ll have to wait. Putting too many items into the dryer in order to speed up the process doesn’t work because the items aren’t going to have enough space for the air circulate around them effectively.

Large items may be best suited for their own dryers, too, so that they will dry evenly. Also, they may be able to withstand a higher temperature than items such as clothing.

Use the right detergent.
Just because you double or triple the load you do at one time doesn’t always mean you double the amount of detergent. Check the machine and the bottle of detergent to see how much you should use for the load you’re doing.

Also, keep in mind that if you use too much soap, you may end up having to run the laundry through another rinse cycle in order to get all of it out. If you’re trying to maximize your time by using a commercial facility, then it could defeat the purpose.
