Commercial Laundry Equipment Common Repairs You Can Fix Without Help

The washer or dryer won’t start.
First make sure it’s plugged it. Sometimes the movement of the machine can cause the plug to become loose. If it is plugged in, then check your fuses. A breaker could have blown and it may need to be flipped back on.

Try another setting to see if it will work. If none of those ideas help, then the washer or dryer may just be dead. If so, call T & L Equipment. They can help you purchase top quality new equipment for your business or laundromat.

The washer doesn’t fill with water.
First, check the inlet hose. If there is a leak or damage to the hose, the water won’t come through like it should. You can put a patch over the inlet hose until you can replace it. If you are familiar with hose replacement, you can do it yourself, but you may need to call in a repair person to help.

The clothes come out wet.
If the clothes are wet, then the washer didn’t drain properly. You can do a test to see if there is a clog in the drain pump. Turn on the washer and let it fill with water, then turn off the power. The drain should open and release the water in 30 seconds or less. If it doesn’t, or it takes longer than 30 seconds, there is a clog between the drum and the waste line. A small item may have gotten stuck in the drain pipe.

The washer’s drum won’t spin.
If the drum inside the washer doesn’t spin, it may be overfilled. Remove some items and readjust them and try again.

Another thing to check is the “gentle action” button on the control panel. If it’s pressed, the agitation cycle will work in reverse, so the drum will rotate and pause intermittently. If you release the button, it should go back to a normal cycle.

If neither of those things work, it could be a broken belt. You can look at the back of the washer to see the belts and pulleys. It’s easy to spot a broken one and replace it yourself, but be careful of your fingers!

The dryer doesn’t dry.
Dryers have heating elements that can malfunction and cause the dryer to not produce enough hot air to dry laundry. To check them, if you have a multimeter to check the voltage, unplug the dryer, remove the front (or rear) panels to find the heating element. Use the multimeter to check the elements. If it’s defective, it will need to be replaced.

  1. I'm glad you mentioned that there may be a problem with the heating element if your clothes don't dry. I have to put my clothes through the dryer at least 3 times to get them fully dry, and it's very inconvenient when doing multiple loads of laundry. I'll check the heating element and contact a professional if necessary.
    • If it's still getting hot then your element is working properly. You should check your exhaust to make sure there are no clogs or restrictions in you vent tube
