How Does a Dryer Work?

There are several types of dryers, from front loading to top loading, to gas and electric dryers, to stand alone to stackable units. The basic principle is the same, no matter what type of dryer it is.

When you get wet clothes out of the washer you toss them into the dryer, turn it on the appropriate setting and hit the start button. After 30-45 minutes, your clothes are dry. It seems fairly simple, but there are many complicated electronical and mechanical involved in the process.

An electric dryer uses heating coils to create energy that is turned into heat, which is blown on your laundry to dry it. A natural gas dryer uses a pilot light that ignites gas that creates heat.

You put your wet clothes into the dryer drum, or tumbler, which has a motor and belt system that turns when you start the dryer. It sits on a roller system and is supported by an axle. The heat produced from the dryer is sent the blower, which sends the air all around the moving clothes, drying them.

The amount of time it takes to dry clothes depends on how quickly and how much air can be circulated around them. You may have had small items get caught in a larger item and come out damp while the other item is dry. The motion of the tumbler is supposed to help move the items so that air can be sent around them to dry them all evenly.

Fresh air is also drawn so that the air already inside, which becomes moist when it’s near the wet laundry, can be sent back out through a vent that runs outside of your home. Air is also sent through the lint trap, which is usually located near the door of the dryer. It helps catch fabric particles, lint and pet hair. You should clean it after each load.

Dryers have options allowing you to control the amount of heat your laundry receives. There are temperature sensors installed to help control the heat. One is near the heating coil and the other is near the front of the dryer. If they get too hot, they have contacts within them that will separate as they become overheated and then the machine turns off.

Dryers are considered simple machines, and have not changed much underneath over the years. While there are many different models with different looks on the market, they have the same basic function.
