A couple of weeks ago, we started a new series on laundry hacks that work. We're picking up that series today and discussing dryer hacks that work. If you want to take your laundry process a step further, read on to discover a few hacks that will keep your clothing looking fresh and clean.
Dryer Hacks that Work #1: Air Dry or Low Heat
We all know that you can shrink your clothes in the dryer if you don't pay attention to your settings or clothing labels. As such, there's a couple of fool-proof ways to make sure you don't shrink your clothes.
- Only dry your clothes on low heat.
- Air dry your clothes on a drying rack.
We find that 100% cotton is most susceptible to shrinkage. Therefore, we normally air dry anything that is 100% cotton on a basic clothing drying rack. Alternatively, if you don't have the floor space for one, there are also wall-mounted drying racks that either fold onto the wall when not in use or can be raised to the ceiling. Air drying your clothing will not only prevent your clothes from shrinkage, but can also save you money on your electric bill.
Dryer Hacks that Work #2: Dryer Sheets
Yes, use dryer sheets - duh. Dryer sheets are great for removing static in clothing and adding life to air-dried clothing. However, typically you don't need a full dryer sheet to get the job done. You can actually cut your dryer sheets in half, which will maximize how long you can use a box of dryer sheets.
Alternatively, if you don't like the idea of using disposable dryer sheets, you can also make your own dryer sheets or use reusable dryer balls (store bought or homemade).
Dryer Hacks that Work #3: Release Stubborn Wrinkles
Wrinkle release starts with your wash cycle, but you can often release those wrinkles in the dryer if you know what you're doing. However, while we're talking about wrinkles, it's worth noting that fabric softener does amazing things for wrinkles, especially if you have hard water.
That said, if you're air drying your clothes, you may find that you need to fluff the clothing in order to release the wrinkles. While dryer sheets work wonders, we find that an even more effective approach is to add a wet washcloth to the load. Then use the "rapid dry" cycle for at least 15 minutes and most of the wrinkles should come out.
You can also use the wrinkle-free setting on your dryer to keep the dryer cycling every so often so that wrinkles don't have a chance to set while waiting for you to come back to the dryer. Ideally, you can pull your clothes straight out of the dryer and either hang or fold immediately to prevent any more wrinkling, but we know that life happens and that's not always feasible.
You can also use Tom & Sherry's Wrinkle Release Spray is highly effective at removing those really stubborn wrinkles from most clothing items. This plant-based spray is safe for kids or pets and is available in a travel-sized container. We not only use it on freshly dried clothing, but also use it on clothes that may have gotten wrinkled in the drawer.
