Common Commercial Washing Equipment

Top Loader
In the past most homes had top loading washing machines, but over the years front loaders have become more popular. A top load washer has a door on the top where laundry goes in. It is considered easier to use than many front loaders because you do not have to bend down to put linens inside. A top loader typically had a drum inside with an agitator that provides the washing action. This is the most widely used type in the world because of ease of use.

There are many benefits to using a top loader, including being able to stop the cycle to toss in something you forgot, shorter wash cycles and more capacity for larger items such as sleeping bags and comforters.

Front Loader
With a front load washer, the laundry is put in from the front side. Someone working in an on-site laundry facility may find using them cumbersome due to the need to bend down to put in and empty the loads. However, they are found to be more efficient when it comes to water and energy usage. Because the inner basket in the front load machine is set horizontally, it does not need to be filled completely with water in order to do its job. It uses about 1/3 of the water of a top loading machine.

Washer Extractor
A washer extractor is an industrial commercial machine that is often used in hotels and healthcare facilities. It is able to extract more water with less energy than a standard washer. It is also sometimes known as a side loader because it may have an access door at the end of the cylinder cage. After the wash cycle, the load of laundry is transferred to a separate hydro extractor. Washer extractors are able to provide continuous batch washing. In some cases, depending on the model, the linens washed in this type of machine can bypass the drying step. If there are linens that need to be ironed, they can proceed to that step without having to go into a tumble dryer.

Continuous Batch Washer (CBW)
This type of industrial machine is used in high volume laundry facilities. Batches of laundry can be processed with a continuous output from soiled to dry at predetermined intervals. They are also called tunnel washers. It has different compartments that make up each step of the laundering process. It has the capability of controlling the temperature, chemicals and dip level in order to customize loads. Not all CBWs are washer extractors, but some washer extractors can have the continuous load capability.
