How to Have Good Clean Fun while doing Valentine’s Day Laundry

Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and while "date night" might look a little different this year due to the ongoing pandemic, it doesn't mean you can't have some good "clean" fun with the one you love. No matter how down and dirty you get this upcoming holiday, your local commercial laundromat is up to the challenge. With that in mind, today we'll discuss how to tackle a few common Valentine's Day laundry mishaps.

Valentine's Day Laundry

Valentine's Day Laundry Mishap #1. Red Wine

Many couples enjoy a glass (or bottle) of red wine as part of their romantic dinner, and almost as many accidentally spill a glass on their favorite outfit. If this happens to you, don't panic. This common Valentine's Day laundry mishap can be easily treated with salt, but you will want to treat the stain as quickly as possible as the longer it sits, the more it will set.

Sprinkle an even layer of salt over the stain and let it sit for about an hour. During this time, the salt will absorb the wine. After an hour, you can brush away any residue. You'll still want to bring the stained garment into your local commercial laundromat, but by applying salt first, you'll hopefully save your favorite outfit.

Valentine's Day Laundry Mishap #2 Chocolate

We can't talk about Valentine's Day laundry without talking about chocolate. Who doesn't love a creamy chocolate dessert at the end of a romantic meal or a box of chocolate as a gift? Yum! Unfortunately, chocolate often poses a problem if it comes in contact with your clothes. If you've ever had melted chocolate, you know how easy it can get everywhere (if you've never experienced a mess with chocolate, give some to your children).

If you encounter this Valentine's day laundry mishap, have no fear! Put the chocolate covered piece of clothing in your refrigerator for 10-20 minutes to contain the stain and prevent the chocolate from penetrating the fabric any further. Once the chocolate has hardened, you can carefully scrape away the excess from the outside in. Then pre-treat your garment with detergent before taking it to your local laundromat. Wash your clothing according to the care instructions and if the stain is still present after the first wash then pre-treat and wash it again.

Valentine's Day Laundry Mishap #3 Fresh Flowers

Many people love to receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers on Valentine's Day. Their fresh fragrance and beautiful colors can make you feel special and brighten up a room. However, fresh-cut flowers can also make a mess of your clothing if you hold them too close. Specifically, the pollen on those flowers can leave a yellow residue on your clothes that can be tricky to get out.

Knowing this, you can avoid this common Valentine's day laundry mishap by simply being more careful while handling fresh flowers. However, if you still manage to get that pollen on your clothing, here's what you'll do. Shake away as much excess pollen as possible, then use a piece of tape to gently lift the remaining pollen from the fabric. Next, apply a spot stain remover to the stained area and soak in cold water. Wash and repeat until there are no traces of pollen remaining.

Valentine's Day Laundry Mishap #4 Make-up

Don't you hate when you've gotten all dressed up for a big night on the town and you realize that you've gotten make-up or lipstick on your outfit? As with any Valentine's day laundry mishap, it's important to act fast if you want to successfully remove the stain. First, dampen the affected area with warm water and lay the fabric stain side down on a paper towel or old rag. Using grease-fighting dish soap (we typically use Dawn), carefully apply pressure to the fabric from the back of the stain. Continue to do this until all evidence of make-up or lipstick is completely gone. Then bring it to your local commercial laundromat and follow the care instructions.
