The Importance of Thanking Your Employees This Holiday Season

Employee recognition is perhaps the easiest way to keep your employees happy, keep morale high, encourage hard work and maintain a well run business or organization. There is a designated day each year to appreciate your employees. March 4th is National Employee Appreciation Day but there are still plenty of reasons to carry it on throughout the year, especially during the holidays.

Why Thanking Your Employees Over the Holidays Is Important

The holidays can be a rough time for everyone. Whether it be at home or in the office, people tend to be significantly more stressed than the rest of the year. More money is being spent, which causes people with any size budget to worry about finances. Depending on your line of work, the holidays tend to be busier and with more coworkers requesting time off during the holidays this can cause employees to have a larger workload. And who could forget about impromptu visits by the in-laws? This chaos caused by holiday madness gives businesses an opportunity to step in and celebrate their employees to help keep their heads held high when they otherwise would be down, focused only on the task ahead.

It is no surprise that people want to be recognized for a job well done. Recognition doesn't have to come with an expensive price tag either. Although spending a few dollars wouldn't hurt, really what an employee wants to hear is a sincere "thank you." Rather than just saying "thank you for everything you do," try to incorporate a specific instance where what they have done has impacted the company or even how it has helped you personally! Try to keep the recognition timely, the longer you wait, the less authentic it tends to be. This helps fill the basic need of feeling respected and valued as a human rather than just a worker bee. A happy workplace is a more productive workplace.

The simple act of telling your employees how much you appreciate them not only makes them feel more connected to you personally, it can have a huge effect on morale and productivity. There are a few easy to remember steps to really optimize this experience. If possible, try to have these interactions face-to-face. With everything being so fast paced these days, it is easy to send a quick email or text but nothing shows sincerity like speaking praise directly to that person. Make eye contact and share a polite handshake when appropriate. According to the Huffington Post "86 percent of employees who were recognized in the last month say they trust their boss, which diminished by almost half when employees had never been recognized, as only 48 percent say they trust their boss." We've all been in a situation at one point in our lives where we felt unappreciated. How much of an impact would've a "thank you" from your employer meant?

Showing appreciation to your employees helps them feel valued and in turn they tend to work harder and respect the company they work for. When a person knows that the work they do is recognized and appreciated, they will give more than what is expected of them because they are motivated to maintain or improve their great work. This also builds and improves company culture. Trust and culture are major keys to employee retention.

There have been multiple studies that have shown that praise/recognition for good behavior or work will encourage it to continue while constant negative interactions with your employees will result in lower moral and loss of motivation. According to Losda & Heaphy: The role of positivity and connectivity in the performance of business teams, 2004 - "Top performing teams give each other more than five positive comments for every criticism."  You would be surprised of the trickle-down effect this can have in a company. Try it! Start the recognition from the top down and soon your employees will be sending words of praise to each other as well as to upper management.
