Flammable Stains
The washing machine's job is to clean your clothes. However, substances like alcohol, cooking oil, and gasoline are highly flammable. If clothes covered in these liquids are put in the washing machine, they can cause a fire. Before you wash, spot treat the stain with a solvent-based stain remover, then hand wash the item.

Pet Hair
Got a blanket, jacket, or another item that is covered in pet hair? All of that fur will clog the drain in the machine and can leave you with a serious mess. Pet hair lingers in machines and gets on subsequent loads of clothes. Instead of tossing your fur covered items into the washing machine, lint roll your items to reduce the hair before you launder.

Coins
While you would never intentionally throw loose change into the washing machine, those coins that do find their way into the machine can cause severe damage. As you load the machine, check your pockets one more time to ensure that you've got all your change out. Who knows, you may find enough to score a candy bar while you wait for your wash to finish.

Pens
Leaving a pen in your pocket can ruin your entire load of laundry. Before you wash, check all pockets. Ink can also stain the washing machine drum and get trapped in the holes inside the drum of the washer. These ink deposits can ruin subsequent loads of clothes. Should you wash a pen, thoroughly clean the machine before any additional loads are run through it.

Car Keys
All too often car keys find their way into the washing machine. Keys can damage the finish inside the drum of the washing machine, but the more significant damage is usually done to the keys themselves. Many vehicle keys are now electric and are unable to withstand a trip through the wash. Always check your pockets.
