Looking for Cheap Mother’s Day Gifts? Do the Laundry!

Looking for Cheap Mother's Day gifts? Studies show that moms (specifically, even though we know that men do perform household tasks as well) spend roughly 17 hours a week doing "housework." 17 hours a week for 52 weeks a year equals 884 hours a year. That does not include laundry, so go ahead and add another 224 hours a week washing and folding clothes. Then add at least an hour or two a day spent on meal prep and clean up.

You can easily see how all these chores can add up. Understandably, there's a reason why moms don't want flowers, chocolate or brunch on Mother's Day. Rather, she'd love to have the day off. No housework. No dirty diapers. No laundry! As such, make this Mother's Day a little more special and show her how much you appreciate all that she does for you by taking over some of those chores. With that in mind, today we'll discuss a few of our favorite "cheap" Mother's Day gifts.

Cheap Mother's Day Gift #1: Clean the Refrigerator

In an ideal world, Mom would be able to clean out her fridge on a weekly basis as it's nice to clean the refrigerator before putting in new food. However, it can be quite time consuming and when you add in all the other things that Mom has to do, cleaning the refrigerator is a task that can often be ignored.

With that said, cleaning the refrigerator might be one of the most appreciated and cheap Mother's Day gifts you can give mom this year because what mom doesn't like having an organized and fresh smelling fridge? Grab some vinegar and water (3 parts water, 1 part vinegar), put an hour on the timer and do the following:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator since it'll be open for awhile. Work quickly. You don't want the milk to spoil.
  2. Take every single item out of the refrigerator. Toss anything that has expired or just looks gross and put anything that will return in a pile on the counter.
  3. With your vinegar and water cleaning solution, take a clean cloth and wipe down all the jars and bottles that will return to the refrigerator. There's no point in cleaning out the fridge if you're just going to put dirty containers back in.
  4. Next, clean the inside of your empty refrigerator. Make sure to remove and wipe down every drawer, every shelf, every wall, ceiling and bottom of the fridge.
  5. Once you've cleaned every nook and cranny, take a dry cloth and wipe everything down to avoid any mildew buildup.
  6. Finally, organize all the items that are to return to the fridge and put them back in neatly.

Cheap Mother's Day Gift #2: Load and Unload the Dishwasher

For one, don't let Mom cook on Mother's Day. Cook for her or order her favorite meal. But just as important, don't let mom clean up the kitchen either. That includes loading and unloading the dishwasher. Another cheap Mother's Day gift is taking over this simple chore (take it a step further and make it your permanent responsibility).

Cheap Mother's Day Gift #3: Vacuum and/or Mop

Vacuuming might be the easiest and cheapest Mother's Day gift and can be a great way to make the house look great for Mom. Take it a step further and send Mom out to get her nails done or have some time for herself. Then vacuum the house.

If Mom's house is full of hardwood floors, she'll really love to come home to a freshly vacuumed and mopped home. Just don't walk in the house with shoes on once you're done.

Cheap Mother's Day Gift #4: Do the Laundry!

If your mom is anything like ours, she's doing laundry all the time. In fact, an average family of four can go through roughly 8 loads of laundry per week. And if Mom is mostly responsible for that laundry, she is spending many hours washing, drying, ironing, folding and putting away laundry. As such, another cheap Mother's day gift is to take over laundry duties (at least for the day).

If you want to take over laundry responsibilities permanently, even just for yourself, we're certain Mom would be happy to show you a few of her tricks. And since the washer and dryer do most of the work, not only is this a cheap gift, the only thing you really have to do is make sure everything is folded and put away.

Alternatively, you can get Mom a new washer and dryer, but only if she's asked for it.
