Preventative Maintenance Tips for Commercial Washing Machines

Commercial washer in Greensboro, NC

You may think that preventative maintenance on a washer isn’t as important as a dryer. A dryer that becomes clogged with lint can pose a fire hazard, but a washer doesn’t produce lint, so it seems much safer and doesn’t need to be maintained as often. That’s not true! It has just as many moving parts that need to be checked to ensure they are working properly.

Buying a commercial washer in Greensboro, NC can be an expensive investment. You'll want them to last as long as they can. Performing routine maintenance on them can help extend their life and help them work more efficiently.

Check the manual to see when the manufacturer suggests that you perform certain tasks, then make a calendar so you can remember to do each one. Do them at the same time you check your dryers, which we wrote about previously, so you can knock it all out in one day.

Here are some other tips for maintaining your commercial washers.

First, check washer water inlet hoses for cracks or swelling. With an expected 5 year life, replacing visibly worn or damaged hoses can save loss from continual leakage and flooding from catastrophic failure.

One of the first things you should do is check and clean or replace the water filter inlet screens. If you experience slow washer filling, this could be the culprit. If water lines inside the store or outside haven't been serviced, it can cause them to become clogged. Dirt, pipe shavings and other particles from the water can cause build up. If you live in an area with hard water, it can occur more frequently.

Also check internal washer fill and chemical supply hoses. They can become damaged due to the chemicals resulting in leaks or develop slow flow because of buildup.

Be sure to check for leaky drain valves on washers by watching drain outlets on drain troughs. You can also watch for washers to top off water levels during a cycle or even ones that seem as though they never get filled.

Every few months, wipe down the equipment exteriors, inside drum and keep the soap dispenser clean. Soap and water works well and some people use furniture polish or stainless steel polish to keep their equipment exteriors looking clean. If you have a laundromat, your customers will appreciate having a clean washer to put their beloved items in.

On front load washers, the area around the inside of the door where it seals with the tub should be kept clean. Debris that may have accumulated can cause problems in the non-leaking seal.

In addition, you will want to clean the areas around your washers regularly. Not only will you be providing a clean work space for your employees or customers, but you can reduce potential work dangers caused by dirty floors or fire hazards.
