How to Reduce Energy Use at Your Laundry Facility

Here are some ways to reduce utility costs:

Check water usage.
By getting a water usage audit, you can see just how much you are spending on water alone. If it seems to have increased in a short period of time, you could have an issue with a leak. Check all your washers to ensure there are no loose hoses.

Program the right cycles.
If you have equipment programmed to run certain cycles, make sure they are still applicable to the loads you are processing. If you have decreased the amount per load, then you may not need to run at the highest speeds and water levels to get your items clean.

Use the right detergent.
You can also reduce water consumption by making sure you are using the right amount of detergent. Using more than is necessary for one load can increase, or even double, rinse time. Also be sure to use enough for heavily soiled linens so they do not have to be washed again. Using proper settings for extra dirty items can also keep you from having to run them through two cycles.

There is special detergent on the market made for low temperatures that can do the same job but won’t require hot water or several rinses to work.

Softeners can help reduce detergent use and keep build-up from forming in the machine, which will help it run more efficiently.

Invest in new equipment.
The cost of running the machines, which includes electricity and water, can be even higher when the equipment is outdated. Newer models can increase efficiency and save money. The cost for a 12-year old washer to run one load is about $1.04 in utilities, compared to a new machine that can process a load for $0.33.

High efficiency washers can reduce water use by more than half. Most older coin-operated washers use 32 to 38 gallons of water per load, while a newer model can use as little as 9 gallons per load. That’s a significant drop that over the course of a few months could save you a lot of money.

Switching to front load machines can also reduce water usage because they require less water than a top loading machine.

Newer dryers can also yield significant savings because they can dry loads in less time, which means less electricity or gas consumption per cycle.

Newer equipment is often smaller and easier to fit into a facility, which means you could add more units to increase your profitability per square foot.
