Laundry Equipment in Charlotte, NCThere could be a ton of different reasons as to why there's a gasoline smell in your washing machines. With all the customers you have coming in and out, the possibilities are endless. It's a big problem that many laundromats face. All loads of laundry will come out smelling like gasoline until the smell is eliminated. There is also a possibility of an explosion or fire from the gasoline or oil residue within the machine. It might seem like you'll have to get new machines in order to get rid of the smell. However, there is a way to eliminate the odor. Below, you will find the best way to get rid of this odor and the dangers that come with it. If you need a free quote on new laundry equipment in Charlotte, NC, call T & L for savings.

The How

Things Needed:

  • Old towels or shirts
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Detergent of choice

Instructions:

  • Gather up 3 to 4 old towels or shirts that are not valuable. Throw them in the washer. These will help absorb the residue and smells. Next, start a large cycle with warm water. If possible, set the rinse cycle to cold. Then, fill the machine up until the water turns off. Once it's filled, add one cup of baking soda plus two cups of white vinegar into the water.
  • Close the lid and begin the washing cycle. The washer should go on a wash, rinse, and a spin cycle. Once the cycles are complete, smell the towels or shirts to see if there is still a gasoline odor.
  • If you can still smell the gasoline in the washer or on the towels repeat the entire process. This should alleviate any and all smells.
  • Once you no longer detect any smells, repeat the wash cycle once more, but this time add detergent as you normally would.
  • If you can't detect a smell, throw the washed items away or hang them out to dry in the sun. Putting them out in the sun will bleach the items and help remove any odor or residue that is on them. That way, when you start drying them, there won't be any more flammable fumes remaining.

Depending on how many machines have this problem, you might be able to reuse the towels or shirts. Be sure they're free of odors and have been air dried outside before reusing.

We hope these tips help you get your laundromat's washers free and clear from odor and the dangers that can come from having gasoline residue in the machine. If you're concerned at all about this problem, consider contacting our repair tech. We can check it out for you.
