More Tips to Clean Your Fire Gear

Maytag Dealers in North Carolina

As our knowledge of chemicals and long-term effects increases, so does our knowledge of how to protect ourselves from them. Firefighters are being taught the long-term effects of wearing dirty protective clothing that allows contaminants to be absorbed through the skin and off-gassing. Gear should be cleaned as soon as possible so that the toxin particles that are attached can be removed thus reducing the wear on gear and keeping it safer for personnel.

For over 40 years, T & L Laundry Equipment has provided the highest quality commercial laundry equipment to fire and rescue personnel. Whether you need one washer and dryer or multiples, let the professionals at T & L put their equipment expertise to work for you.

More Tips For Cleaning Your Fire Gear

Manufacturers recommend a front-loading washing machine, as agitators can be harmful for gear. There are specific machines that are specially designed for cleaning turnout gear and if your firehouse can afford these, that is ideal. The washer’s extractor G-force is something to consider, you want to be sure that your extractor is not higher than 100 G’s. In fact, it is suggested that 85 G’s are best for cleaning turnout gear. To calculate the G-forces take your cylinder rpm (CRPM), multiply it by itself, and then multiply by the cylinder diameter in inches (CD), then divide this number by 70,500. Your equation should look like this:

  • G-forces = CRPM x CRPM x CD /70,500

Unsure what kind of equipment you need? Your T & L sales representative can help you choose. Understanding machines and their different capabilities ensures that you’re getting the best clean for your gear every time you wash.

When it comes to washing your gear, be sure to always prepare the clothing as directed by the manufacturer. This means removing liners, fastening all closure systems, and separating the shells. Wash items inside out and wash smaller items, like gloves, in garment bags. Use warm water, not to exceed 105 degrees F on a normal cycle wash cycle. Do not mix other laundry in with these items. Also, be sure to not overload the washing machine, do not use softeners, and never use chlorine bleach on your gear.

Be sure that you are using a washing machine that releases the cleaning chemicals at the right time in the wash process and at the right temperature. It is important that firehouses choose washing machines with this feature because it prevents the overuse of chemicals that will damage the fabric. It will also save the department money through more efficient use of the cleaning chemicals.

Washer-extractors that are called soft-mount washers do not require a reinforced concrete foundation, making them easier to install and reducing installation costs. Hard-mount washers must be bolted to a thick concrete foundation, making them harder to do maintenance on, and very difficult to move or relocate. Soft-mount washers have suspension systems that absorb the energy of the unit, thus eliminating the need for bolting the washer to the floor. They can also be located anywhere compared to hard mount washers which will need to be on a ground floor.
