Comforter Washing Tips
Check the care label.
People are usually apt to check the care label on clothing before washing items or having them dry cleaned, but may not think about the care instructions for household linens such as your comforter. There should be a care label that says whether it can withstand a wash in a machine, or whether it needs to be hand-washed or dry cleaned.
Most store bought comforters are made of washable materials such as cotton and polyester that can be tossed into a washing machine. If your comforter is a handmade family heirloom, it may be best to avoid putting it in a machine. You can hand wash it and spot treat any stains.
Some comforters may be okay for the washer, but not the dryer. A down comforter may or may not be able to go into a dryer. The label should let you know what is safe. In some cases, it may be okay to put your comforter in the dryer, but only on air dry or low heat. Too high of a heat setting can damage the fabric. If the comforter has any decorative details such as beading, they may melt in a hot dryer.
Use a small amount of mild detergent.
Don’t use a harsh detergent or one that has bleach in it. The fillings in comforters can be damaged by some detergents. Plus, detergents with too strong of a smell may bother you when you try to sleep. Use one with few chemicals and no scent or a light, clean fragrance.

Check for stains and repair holes.

Use the largest machine and lower settings.

Also, while drying, check the items every 15 minutes or so to make sure they have not gotten bunched up, which will keep them from drying evenly.
