What are Laundromat Bulkheads?

coin operated washers and dryers in Greensboro, NCIf you're unfamiliar with the parts and equipment that go into building a laundromat, you might not have heard of bulkheads. Even if you have, you might not fully understand how important they are and why they're typically manufactured by a company rather than in-house from the distributor. Today, and over the next couple of blogs, we will talk in depth about bulkheads. Be sure to stay tuned for more information. Many times, there are parts of building a laundromat that customers don't understand. There is much more to a laundromat besides just washers and dryers.

There are many aspects of building a laundromat, including but not limited to:

  • Water heater
  • Changers and various types of payment systems
  • Folding tables
  • Waiting area seating
  • Laundry carts
  • Bases for washers
  • Upfit

Another important item needed in a laundromat are bulkheads. As we mentioned above, you might not be aware of what this is. Basically, it’s a rectangular box that goes in between washers placed back to back or behind washers installed up against a wall. The bulkhead is a frame covered with decorative facia that conceals the utility connections for the washers. This includes hot and cold water coming into each washer, drain line or trough going out, and the electrical connections.

Essentially, there is tubing and conduit running the length of the bulkhead so each washer can be connected to the bulkhead and the bulkhead can be connected at one point in the floor or via the ceiling to the building’s utility connections.

Without using properly manufactured bulkheads, investors will see the difference at some point. At times, the problems can come quickly. Other issues might happen further down the road. However, there will be issues at some point when improper bulkheads are used.

Improper access to the backs of the washers and the drainage can cause problems. If the drain backs up or something as simple as a washer belt needs to be changed, it can become difficult. Even other distributors who build their own bulkheads can miss it. At T & L, we have had to uninstall multiple washers to service one because there wasn't enough space to enter the bulkhead and access the area that needed to be served. Having a difficult service call can mean extra time in repairs, lost business, and time consuming down time.
